NAME: Veronica Teklai
POSITION: Senior Specialist, ConnectedDrive, BMW CarData
LOCATION: Woodcliff Lake, NJ
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH BMW? 6 Years
Q: DESCRIBE YOUR ROLE AT BMW:
A: I am the USA project manager responsible for fulfillment of the BMW CarData Platform and the corresponding Billing & Payment system.
Q: DESCRIBE A DEFINING MOMENT IN YOUR CAREER AND HOW IT SHAPED YOUR PATH:
A: During one specific opportunity I was facing a seemingly large challenge. After some reflection and prayer I realized the only way to overcome it was to go through it and face it straight on. This moment shaped my path because it reiterated my belief that taking challenges straight on is the only way to conquer them. In my personal experience, each challenge I’ve overcome has turned into a stepping stone. These stepping stones became ammunition for taking down future challenges.
Q: WHO IS A FEMALE ROLE MODEL TO YOU AND WHAT DO YOU ADMIRE ABOUT HER?
A: My aunt has always been a role model for me. At a young age she went to university abroad and eventually became a successful computer programmer. I admire the courage, resolve and strength of character that helped her forge new paths for herself.
Q: WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER WOMEN INTERESTED IN YOUR FIELD?
A: Never be afraid to take on new challenges, despite how intimidating they might seem. Always remember that everyone puts their pants on just like you do, one leg at a time. The only difference is others have more experience than you. Therefore, as a starting point, you must make it your goal to gain relevant work experience in this field. Never forget there is only one you. This is what makes you YOU-nique. My advice would be to gain relevant experience and show up with your YOU-nique view of problem solving. This is what I believe will make you valuable.
Q: WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING MOST OUTSIDE OF WORK?
A: Outside of work I enjoy learning new things such as stock market and money management topics. I’m an active supporter of Educational Opportunity Fund Alumni group at Ramapo College. I take opportunities to mentor high school/college students in education and career planning. I volunteer and support church activities. Additionally, I spend lots of time meal planning and working on new exercise routines.
