In partnership with Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), the BMW Group is testing a new service that will optimize renewable energy sources to power electric vehicles.
The BMW Group is currently testing a new pilot project, ChargeForward, which aims to use as much solar energy as possible to charge electric vehicles and keep the electric grid stable. In partnership with Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), smart software created by BMW monitors the electricity grid for high loads and defers charging for times when there is less strain on the infrastructure. Similarly, the charging control system responds flexibly to when the weather is sunny to utilize abundant renewable energy. This allows charging to be cheaper and cleaner for the customer and the utility.
