Albert Straus has been a force for sustainability by leading his family dairy farm to become the first 100% certified organic, zero-waste, non-GMO creamery in North America.
Using innovative methods and creativity, Straus Family Creamery uses bio “digesters” to convert methane produced from manure into biogas, which is then used to fuel an on-farm generator. As part of this initiative, Straus entered into a first-of-its-kind agreement with the BMW Group to supply cow-to-car renewable electricity to BMW vehicles in California. The program allows BMW to qualify for carbon credits and pays farmers up to ten times more than what they’d earn through a regular power-purchase agreement with public utility companies.
